Work Incentives/Employment Support
SSA policies that help disability beneficiaries go to work and receive benefits in an attempt to become more independent.

DHU
Disability Hearings Unit. A unit in each DDD regional office that conducts in person hearings with disabled beneficiaries who appeal a DDD decision that the individual is no longer disabled.

DWB
Disabled Widows (Widowers) Benefits. Title II benefit category for widows or widowers based on a deceased spouse's social security payments.

Own Occupation (Own Occ)
Under this definition, an insured will be considered disabled only if he or she is unable to perform the duties of his or her occupation.

Benefit Percentage
The benefit payable is usually determined as a percentage of the insured's pre-disability income up to an overall maximum benefit amount.

Blind Work Expenses (SSI)
If you are blind, when we determine your SSI eligibility and payment amount we do not count any earned income that you use to meet expenses in earning the income.

Ticket to Work program
The Ticket to Work program provides disabled beneficiaries with expanded options for access to employment services, vocational rehabilitation services, or other support services.

Elimination Period
This is the period of time between the date the disability commences and the beginning of the benefit payment period. It is the period during which an employee must be disabled before payment of benefits begins. It is sometimes referred to as the Qualifying Period.

Representative Payee
Individual appointed by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to manage the cash benefits of a recipient of SSI or Social Security benefits, or both.

Family and Medical Leave Act
The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 To grant family and temporary medical leave under certain circumstances

PD

Definition:
Presumptive Disability. Only for SSI claims. Enables an early (presumptive) allowance of benefits for 6 months based on a substantial probability of a final allowance when all required documentation is obtained. A PD can be reversed to a denial, but the claimant does not return the PD benefits.

Augmentative or alternative communication (AAC) device

Definition:
An electronic device that talks for a person who cannot speak. The device usually has a recorded or electronic voice and can say words or sentences the user chooses.

AEA

Definition:
acquired eleptiform aphasia (Landau-Kleffner syndrome)
